Is Google On a SEO Crackdown That Could Ruin Your Internet Marketing Dreams?

There are certain letters that a person receives in their mailbox that tends to send shivers up their spine. One such letter could come from the IRS, or the Sheriff’s Department or Child Support Enforcement and now more and more webmasters are receiving such letters from the Google Spam Team.

Between the months of January and February of 2012, the Google Search Quality Team, better known to Internet Marketers as the Google Spam team, sent out almost one million of these nasty grams. If you have not been keep tracking that is more than the total number of nasty grams they sent all last year. That alarming figure is also higher than what the Google spam team has sent out since Google installed the message center in (GWT) Google Webmaster Tools. Take a look at this graph:

We grabbed those numbers from one of the Google presenters at the 2012 SMX Search Marketing Expo. We are told the tally for the months of January and February, represents messages that were sent because they were triggered as algorithm automated generated messages and some were sent because the Google spam team manually reviewed certain websites.

Here is one of those Google warning letters:

Dear site owner or webmaster of (site name)

We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results.

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

If you have any questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.

Sincerely,

Google Search Quality Team
