There are certain letters that a person receives in their mailbox that tends to send shivers up their spine. One such letter could come from the IRS, or the Sheriff’s Department or Child Support Enforcement and now more and more webmasters are receiving such letters from the Google Spam Team.
Between the months of January and February of 2012, the Google Search Quality Team, better known to Internet Marketers as the Google Spam team, sent out almost one million of these nasty grams. If you have not been keep tracking that is more than the total number of nasty grams they sent all last year. That alarming figure is also higher than what the Google spam team has sent out since Google installed the message center in (GWT) Google Webmaster Tools. Take a look at this graph:
We grabbed those numbers from one of the Google presenters at the 2012 SMX Search Marketing Expo. We are told the tally for the months of January and February, represents messages that were sent because they were triggered as algorithm automated generated messages and some were sent because the Google spam team manually reviewed certain websites.
Here is one of those Google warning letters:
Dear site owner or webmaster of (site name)
We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.
Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.
We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results.
If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

By the time you factor in these warnings with the demise of the various private networks and then factor in the countless website owners who have lost rankings and those who had their incomes wiped out overnight, things can easily start to look bleak.
The truth is, there has been a SEO shakeout that is essentially amounting to a Google crackdown. That point cannot be disputed by anyone with a tad of SEO sense. The million dollar questions are, “Who got hit the hardest? How long will these crackdowns last? And, most importantly, how does an Internet Marketer and SEO provider bounce back?”
Who Got Hit The Hardest?
Those who were affected the most are those Internet Marketers and SEO experts who were not on their “A” game. Meaning, if they didn’t understand and execute (GOLD) Genuine Overall Link Diversity, they more than likely got hit with a loss rankings and loss of income.
A prime example is all of the individuals who relied solely on networks such as BMR, ALN, BB, HPRS and others to rank. Of course, when Google torched those networks, it is safe to say that collectively, tons of people lost millions of dollars. Genuine Overall Link Diversity would have lessened the blow and protected them from the aftermath.
How Long Will These Google Crackdowns Last?
The duration is anyone’s guess unless you are a Google insider. The thing is, when you really understand the mindset of Larry Paige and the direction that he is taking Google and apply that knowledge to what we know about Matt Cutts and the Google spam team, the answer is, “Prepare for the long haul.” You need to sharpen you and hone your SEO skills to meet all of today’s challenges. That means proactively dealing with the challenges thrown at us by Google on a monthly, weekly and daily basis.
